how to finish shiplap edges

Use finish nails for a smooth look. But for now our shiplap just ends with that one wall. However, I’ve RECEIVED a lot of questions about how to paint shiplap, so I’m going to be answering all of them today! Great post! Painting by hand takes a few days at least (for me, with normal life distractions), and painting with a sprayer takes about 30 minutes for both primer and paint (we have this paint sprayer). Let’s get back to talking about our new shiplap wall in our current 1950s dining room! Here we went with a different material, look and installation than we have used before. Technically not shiplap siding, tight gap is S4S 1x6 or 1x8 stock that is butted edge-to-edge, but it is lumped into the same design conversation, so I’ll include it here. He wants a change in the trim and the shiplap so there’s some depth in the trim around the door. And, as ever, that old stuff marked with generations of wear and tear makes my heart beat just a bit faster. It definitely helps muffle the sound! For example, when … These boards can be slightly thicker than the shiplap … I, too, would like to know the wall color and the paint used for the shiplap. I’ve never read anything to suggest that prior. For most of the shiplap we install, however, I think the butt joint leaves a cleaner look; I don’t like the little holes the rabbet reveals where it covers the nickel gaps. I painted them white 20 years ago and have always loved them. Thank you for your kind words, it’s fun for me to share. I measure the wall height in a few places, measure the shiplap’s face coverage plus the reveal, then—using a baluster-layout app called BalusterPro on my phone—divide to see how the pieces land. Both vertical and horizontal reference lines are needed to create an accurate 45-degree layout on the walls. I bet that would work, I can’t quite visualize it but with a trim piece at the end or something it would probably work just fine :). This Northeastern girl never heard of shiplap before Fixer Upper. He built a house for my grandmother and himself which I have memories of but we were just toddlers. On a short wall, only a single, centered vertical layout line is required; on a longer wall with multiple V’s, the verticals need to be laid out carefully depending on where the V points will be located. It’s never perfect! I LOVE white subway tile, but I am wondering if you think that will be too much white-on-white-on-white? Figuring out how to terminate runs and make transitions is one of the first things to get a handle on when adding shiplap siding to a room. I was still struggling with the cost as we had just bought this new house and had zero money, however I went on a search to Lowe’s to find a good wood product and found that bead board planks from Lowe’s, that were 10 planks for $10, when flipped over mimic the look of shiplap. Ugh! Just trying ti do the math…could you give a rough estimate on the total cost of the mdf? I think that the really fake stuff will always be a trend. When we’re working with shiplap, the starting and stopping points—or terminations—determine how we install it and what tools we reach for to get it done. I actually had a question that is unrelated to shiplap, but it is related to the color white (LOL)…we have white kitchen cabinets and we just had white quartz countertops installed (there are some gray flecks in the countertop). We only planked just the one wall (so far, anyway) in our dining room. I’m glad you shared earlier photos. Shiplap walls laid horizontally work even when there isn’t crown molding to finish it. Also, the finish … GREAT post!! It is considered a good option for a backyard or garden shed because it will last for quite some time. :). Where would you recommend getting shiplap…we installed 6″ in laundry but decided wider ,8″, would be better for bigger living area…seems harder to find …lumberyard? Enjoy your room! The planks in our previous house were thick and long pine boards bought from a lumberyard. I cut the short return pieces on the flat with a sliding compound miter saw, then fastened them with glue and a 23-gauge pin nailer. The top board is installed right up against our ceiling and caulked (it was installed the same way in my old kitchen). I know it was long and a lot to read, you might want to pin it and save it to refer to again! If I missed anything you wanted to know, feel free to ask away in the comments.Â. It’s such a fun show. Your email address will not be published. The boards were nailed (nail gun) and glued very close together (I don’t believe the contractor used spacers at all) so the grooves between are less pronounced (nice for not accumulating dust, I suppose! Thank you! Hi! Great ideas!!! P.S. Crown molding would look a little off and you would need to compound cut returns on the ends. For mid-wall terminations, I like to run my stops square and butt to them, though if I’m worried about expansion and contraction—say, on a beach house—I might considering rabbeting both sides of the stop to cover the ends of the shiplap. You truly have a talent for making a beautiful home. If so, what kind of end cap did you use? I would like more of your opinion on the vertical option of paneling. You can see all the details on the walls here, and all kitchen sources here. To terminate a run of shiplap in the field, the author uses mitered returns cut flat on a sliding compound miter saw. True shiplap siding has a rabbit edge. Do you think shiplap can end before the wall ends? It was originally a material under old plaster walls and used as siding on barns and buildings and has been used decoratively for years. I’d appreciate any feedback you could give. I sprayed and sanded a few times to get the desired finish. Shiplap cladding offers the visual appeal of overlap cladding whilst providing the strength and durability of tongue and groove cladding. My kitchen/den/hearth room is undergoing a remodel right now and I’d love to shiplap one or two of the walls but was wondering if horizontal lines would make my 7 1/2 foot ceilings appear lower. A table saw makes quick work of both cuts—rabbet and square. I also like that the wall feels in line with the vibe of an older house. Cut 4x8-foot plywood pieces into 6-inch-wide strips. Roxanne West, of Bonjour Bliss, used our Metrie Complete pre-painted shiplap to create a beautiful feature wall. Sometimes, it looks better to have the border piece at the bottom, sometimes at the top. Caulking makes it feel like they just disappear into the wall, rather than as if they were applied on top of a wall. You can see the actual pine tongue and groove boards we used, above. Do you see the two little notches on each board in the middle of the plank? For those of you who aren’t sure about white walls, you can of course paint it any color you want. Hi Melissa, thanks so much for this post. For example, a 1x6 packed out 1/8 inch is still behind the 5/4 casing but proud of the shiplap, and it blends nicely with the casing.
