The soils are excellent, the exposure good and the proximity to the other fine appellations means that great wines are possible here. The Les Petits Noizons is one of the best sites in Pommard and therefore the wines are particularly attractive. Although it is labelled as a humble Bourgogne Blanc, the vineyards that Julien maintains around Saint Aubin and in the Cote Chalonnaise (near the village of Montbellet, are on very good terroir, similar to the nearby Puligny Montrachet where outstanding white wines are produced. 50% destemming, 12 days maceration in fiberglass vats, alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts, end of fermentation in oak barrels, 100% Gamay, grapes from Patrick Besson. We love the fact that Julien is quite restless and is always searching for new challenges. The juice is matured in fibreglass vats and the resultant wine is a stunner – it is one of the best examples of Gamay that we have ever tried!!! This is why red wines are particularly favoured here – Pinot Noir has a particular affinity for these soils and therefore the Pommard reds are sought after. It is a silky Pinot with elegance and structure. It is a beautiful Burgundy at a very reasonable price for a Gevrey Chambertin. He may not have the responsibility any more but as a mentor he is still ever-present. The first time Julien Altaber produced this cuvée he gave it the name Métisse (mixed) because it was a mix of both white and red grapes, namely Gamay and Chardonnay. The first bottle of this 100% Chardonnay was alive and vibrant. So, the wine is from the Saint-Aubin appellation which is famous for its white wines in particular due to its proximity to Puligny-Montrachet. Domaine Derain Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien Blanc 2013. It was recently in a tasting at Melbourne’s Blackhearts and Sparrows who described the wine in the following terms: “Bottled on its lees, it’s a cloudy, savoury wine dominated by notes of tart fruits, salinity, lemon pith and crunchy apple that are framed around chalky minerality and assertive earthiness. You might even detect some of the characteristic Gevrey flavour in this wine! The yield is relatively low at 38 hectolitres per hectare. We first tasted his wines at an event in Avallon near Chablis and we were entranced by their purity and charm. The grapes (50% destemmed and 50% whole bunches) were crushed and then, instead of the juice being run off, it was left in contact with the skins for an nine day period allowing the anthocyanins and other polyphenols in the skins and pips to leach into the juice. The name is pun on the variety from which it’s made. La Combe is a tiny plot of only .5 hectare (they purchased .2 hectare recently). The 2013 was a tough year but the wines that were produced from a smaller harvest were very good. Dominique Derain has been making wine in Burgundy for almost thirty years. This is a lovely, lovely drink. 80% whole grape, 15 days maceration, alcoholic fermentation with autochthonous yeasts in a 15 -hl foudre (75%) and in 5-10 year old barrels (25%), 100% Chardonnay. Don’t worry about the fact that this is a ‘simple’ Bourgogne wine. Domaine Derain Las Nubes 2018 (from Chile) Dominique Derain has been making wine in Burgundy for almost thirty years. A few years ago, Dominique officially retired. We look forward to the evolution of this wine. The grapes are picked by hand and placed carefully in small boxes to avoid crushing the fruit. It is fermented with native yeasts so it is alive and vibrant and completely compelling. The Mercurey appellation is increasingly receiving critical acclaim as a number of young winemakers have recognised the attractive nature of the terroir here and are producing wines of considerable elegance. manual vintage, soft pneumatic pressing, slow alcoholic fermentation (4 to 6 months) with autochthonous yeasts and temperature control, without sulfur added. It is definitely an appellation to watch. Living Wines is an Australian importer of delicious natural wines - wines made from grapes that have not been sprayed with systemic sprays, that have been fermented using only the natural yeasts from the vineyard, that have had no additions in the winery except for a little sulphur. The wine is still sold under the Derain banner, but if you look closely at the fine print you can see that Julien, who runs the Sextant domaine, now has begun to produce this cuv, Domaine Derain Vin de France Allez Goutons Rouge 2018, label and even a second name just to confuse everyone! traditional vinification, 100% Chardonnay. This year we also have a tiny quantity of a unique wine vinified by Dominique Derain with Tutti Frutti Ananas, itself a collaboration between a group of winemakers based in Banyuls-sur-Mer, and working from Les 9 Caves, one of the most treasured natural wine addresses in the south of France. But this struggle produces what many claim are the best wines from Saint-Aubin. So this is an homage to a beer that Julien likes very much. Le Domaine Sextant était né ! This is a lovely wine with an appealing cherry and strawberry fruit flavour, a core of acidity, great freshness, an underlying spiciness and perfect balance. Coteaux Bourguignons is a relatively new appellation in Burgundy and wines can be made under this appellation from the southernmost part at the bottom of Beaujolais to the northernmost part up near Chablis. The terroir here is perfect for the production of flavoursome white wines for which the area is rightly famous. When you pour a glass of this lovely Chardonnay you will first notice the golden colour with hues of green. It once again shows that the Saint Aubin appellation is capable of producing outstanding white wines due to the quality of the limestone soils here. The wines range from the rustic to the ethereal. We are amazed at the finesse and depth of this outstanding wine and we think it can give many of the nearby Puligny wines a run for their money! Note that this wine is closed with a glass stopper, so no chance of cork taint. This makes these premier cru wines some of the best value in Burgundy. This makes these premier cru wines some of the best value in Burgundy. This is a superb wine of considerable complexity and great elegance. It is lip-smackingly delicious. We really like wines that are made from macerated Pinot Gris (the grapes purchased from Patrick Besson and grown on granitic soil) and this one is no exception. The 2011 is a lively, strong, structured deep-red wine showing all the complexity and elegance you would expect from a Pommard! There has been no sulphite added to this wine and the alcohol level is a sensible 12%. The presence of the anthocyanins from the skins turns the wine a light orange colour and some of the other polyphenols extracted during the maceration give the wine a lovely rounded mouth feel. The wine is both powerful and elegant making it perfect for aging – however it is also drinking very nicely now. Note that there are only small quantities of this vintage available due to the poor growing season. This delicious Chardonnay is made from vines in the En Vesvau lieu dit which lies on the rocky, sunny slopes of Montrachet. This wine is made by Dominique as an early drinking style to be consumed within a couple of years of being made. The Le Ban is one of the best wines from the Derain vineyards! After pressing, the juice and skins are transferred to large wooden vats for maceration for up to two weeks before the juice is transferred to old oak barrels for six months of maturation. Julien is a thoughtful person who has absorbed the art and the science of winemaking and decided to branch out with his own wines made from grapes sourced from some very good terroirs in the area. We love Aligoté, especially when it is grown in great terroir. The alcohol level is delightfully low at 11%. He has recently handed over much of the work to Julien Altaber and Carole Schwab from Sextant. Just the thing to have around for an impromptu toast to a friend, or for a cheese plate oozing with Epoisses. He went on to explain that he purchases the Gamay from two parcels of his friend Patrick Besson. Two years later we saw that there was only Gamay on the label, so we pointed out to Julien that the name was no longer reflective of how he was making the wine. In 1988 he and his wife Catherine purchased 5.5 hectares of vineyards in Saint-Aubin just south of Beaune and began tending the vines biodynamically and making their wines in a non-interventionist way as well. Les Reuchaux is a very good site with good exposure and excellent soil. This is the second year that Julien has made this amazing pétillant naturel with a difference. Every year Julien Altaber seems to find new things to invent, depending upon the grapes that his biodynamic friends have to sell him. But don’t spend too long admiring the colour as it is the mouth-enveloping flavour that will really impress you. We were delighted when this wine arrived in Australia because it had not suffered from the journey at all. Well, it is all rather simple. The yields here are painfully low at only 30 hectolitres per hectare so expect this red to have good fruit flavours and good structure. Julien puts a large “tea bag” of apricots in with the fermenting wine and it develops undertones of the apricots without dominating the resultant sparkling wine. Despite the fact that it is a drink-now style it has incredible complexity and very good length. This wine can accompany just about any type of food including spicy dishes. Remember that the Cote d’Or is divided into the Cote de Nuits in the north running from just below the outskirts of Dijon down to, but not including the village of Pernand-Verglesses. The wine is not fined or filtered before bottling. Domaine Derain are biodynamic producers in Burgundy with vines in a number of different Burgundian appellations. It is a beautifully structured wine showing notes of red berries and cherries with finely integrated tannins. For us, it has been a wonderful generational change. Through a Parisian friend he met up with a Chilean vigneron called Julio Denoso who asked him if he would be interested in making some of his wines in Chile. The result is an extraordinary wine where the two grape varieties sing together to present an harmonious wine that provides great drinking pleasure. This wine shows just how good wines can be from the underrated appellation of Saint-Aubin.
